Lobstering in Spanish Wells

February 2020

After going to Spanish Wells for a couple of days on our island hop last summer we knew right away we would be back. It is a quaint little fishing village just a ferry ride from Elutherra. We took a direct flight via Delta to North Eleuthra, and were in The Bahamas in 2 hours. It was a little overcast when we arrived, but it cleared up nicely.

We cleared customs in the teeny tiny airport terminal with what seemed like a million other people, but if I counted it was probably only 15. We squeezed our way out to the shuttle waiting to bring us to the ferry for Spanish Wells, breathed a sigh of relief and settled into island life. The ferry ride is a very short 15 minute troll to the docks at Spanish Wells. Golf carts buzzed around and Lobster boats lined the docks.

We rented a beautiful beach cottage called Island Waves. We settled in, by that I mean we threw our stuff in the house, took a quick look at the beach and headed to find food. We loaded onto our golf cart that was affectionately named Betsy.
(Unfortunaly, Betsy didn’t make it for the entire trip, she had a few serious issues and we had to turn her in for a newer model) We landed at the Shipyard which turned out to be a favorite spot for lunch and dinner. After we filled our stomach were ready to drive on the left side and tackle the Food Fair (the island grocery store). We stocked up and loaded Betsy down (might be what led to her demise?) with groceries and turned toward the house.

We unloaded our food only to realize we were locked out! Turns out Carla had locked the house down like Fort Knox, to keep out any would be burglars. She gave me the key, but I said thanks and set it right back on the table, because no one locks their house in Spanish Wells, right? Well, now she knows. We tried all the numbers we had but didn’t get any response, so the only thing to do was go to the beach. Eventully, we were able to get in after all the locals returned from an island wedding. TO BE CONTINUED………… Apologies for the very bad video. I posted for a friend who is headed to Spanish Wells. Still needs a ton of work. ;0

Beautiful place! I actually gasped out loud when you jumped into the water…it looked as if you were going to hit the rocks.
